Girls Against Boys
There's quite a history between GVSB and Democrazy... those who know will understand. Girls Against Boys started off as a project involving bassist/keyboardist Eli Janney and Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty, who left after recording only three songs. Janney released several records under the name, but Girls Against Boys didn't really become a band until three Washington, D.C., musicians formerly in a band called Soul Side moved to New York and hooked up with Janney. Guitarist/singer Scott McCloud, bassist Johnny Temple, and drummer Alexis Fleisig had all grown up together, with the Washington hardcore scene led by Fugazi as a common point of interest. (McCloud, Temple, and Shudder to Think's Nathan Larson also collaborate on a side project, New Wet Kojak.) Although the band was somewhat leery of signing to a major label, they found themselves able to finance a European tour by taking advantage of interested labels' willingness to pay for hotel accommodations. The first album released under the Girls Against Boys name with its current lineup was Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby, which was also their first release for Touch & Go. Venus Luxure No. 1 Baby earned positive reviews, as did Cruise Yourself, which was released in the fall of 1994. Throughout 1995, Girls Against Boys was the subject of major-label attention, and by the end of the year, they had decided to sign with DGC. They agreed to fulfill their contract with Touch & Go before they left the label, releasing House of GVSB in the spring of 1996 to positive reviews. Their major-label debut, Freak*on*ica, appeared in 1998. After a lengthy hiatus, Girls Against Boys returned to the underground with a contract for Jade Tree and a 2002 full-length, You Can't Fight What You Can't See. Now they are back on public demand !
